Jacqui Colley borrows the title of this show from the John Berger book, Here is where we meet. While the book is composed of linked stories and the authors own reflections – her luscious paintings resist narratives and figuration, they are her own reflections, collisions and meditations. The paintings offer a powerful antidote to a screen saturated world, inviting a deeper, multi-sensory engagement and a tangible connection to human history, and a connection to the physical world.

The surface of the paintings has a variety of textures and marks akin perhaps to the later works of Willem de Kooning or Helen Frankenthaler, and indeed it would be easy to apply a landscape reading to the works but perhaps they are, as the artist says, ‘reflections that resist narratives and figuration’ and seek to find, as John Berger does in his writing ‘a sense of connection to human history.’ Colley uses oil medium and wax in degrees of viscosity and transparency employing a combination of fluid brush strokes with overlays of smaller more intense marks and a limited but harmonic colour palette.
