Kathy Barber | Beyond the Edge

  • Orexart 221 Ponsonby Road Auckland New Zealand (map)

28 October – 22 November

Kathy Barber’s new works retain links to a form of landscape but have untethered themselves in a way that conjures broader horizons, limitless skies glimpsed through a clearing, or from the entrance to a cave.

Barber is renowned for the depth and stillness of her paint surfaces. Using techniques that owe their visual origins to Japanese calligraphy, aided by a patient building of layers, Her works possess a meditative quality where space and substance neatly overlap. The sensation is summed up well in the quote below by Haruki Murakami, from Kafka on the Shore…

Beyond the edge of the world there’s a space where emptiness and substance neatly overlap, where past and future form a continuous, endless loop. And, hovering about, there are signs no one has ever read, chords no one has ever heard.
