The Yayas hydrastone, wood, fibre, paint 850 to 860mm
The Yayas take a deeper dive into Viky Garden’s Greek ancestry, transforming personal memory into symbolic form. The Yayas are affectionate representations of Greek grandmothers in the form of totemic sculptures. They embody four distinct presences, not passive representations but active gatekeepers of memory.
The paintings expand the exhibition’s scope into a more conceptual exploration of socio-political power as evidenced by the titles, Duty, Crown, Throne, Monarch, Dominium, all the while using an identifiable ‘self’ as subject for our deliberation.
